Caring for small animals with fragile physiology demands particular patience and hands-on experience, and I genuinely enjoy that challenge.

Why exotic pets need different handling

Dogs and cats have a relatively wide margin of tolerance. Exotic pets do not. Hamsters, hedgehogs, and sugar gliders have very fast metabolisms and light bodies, so dehydration and a drop in blood sugar can happen within hours, not days. Reptiles, on the other hand, are cold-blooded and fully dependent on enclosure temperature and lighting, so many of their illnesses are rooted in husbandry mistakes rather than germs.

What unites them all is one strong instinct: hiding pain. In the wild, an animal that looks weak is an animal that gets hunted. So by the time you finally see symptoms, the condition is often already advanced. This is why dosing, handling technique, and symptom reading for exotic pets cannot simply be borrowed from dogs and cats. Mishandling an animal weighing only tens of grams can be even riskier than the illness itself.

Species I handle

This service routinely handles the exotic small pet group, including:

• Hedgehogs. Often present with refusing to eat, bloating, or limbs tangled in fibres (a hibernation attempt and wobbly syndrome must be told apart carefully).
• Sugar gliders. Prone to malnutrition and problems from an unbalanced diet.
• Hamsters. Digestive issues, lumps, and a rapid decline in condition.
• Guinea pigs. Highly dependent on vitamin C intake and prone to dental and digestive problems.
• Ferrets. Small carnivores with their own particular needs and vulnerabilities.
• Reptiles and tortoises, including sulcata, whose problems often stem from temperature, lighting, and diet.

Emergency signs you must not delay on

Each species has its own alarms. Some of the most important:

• Hedgehogs and hamsters: not eating for more than 12 to 24 hours, lethargy, a cold-feeling body, a swollen or bloated belly, or diarrhoea.
• Sugar gliders: refusing to leave the pouch, seizures, hind-leg paralysis, or refusing food.
• Guinea pigs: stopping eating along with reduced or absent droppings. This signals the gut has stopped moving (GI stasis) and is a genuine emergency that needs fast care.
• Reptiles and tortoises: a constantly gaping mouth with mucus or breathing sounds (a sign of respiratory trouble), swelling, or prolonged food refusal with lethargy.

How the home visit works

I keep the flow as simple as possible so you do not add to your burden in a moment of panic:

1. Tell me over WhatsApp first. Share the species, the symptoms, and since when. This initial consultation is free, and from here I can assess how urgent it is.
2. Schedule the visit. I come to your home in the Jabodetabek area with basic examination equipment.
3. Hands-on examination. Exotic pets are in fact calmer when examined in their own environment, and the stress of travelling to a clinic can be avoided, which matters for animals this fragile.
4. Treatment and follow-up plan. I explain the condition in plain language, then lay out the care steps, husbandry fixes, or a referral if it is truly needed.

I do not promise miracles. What I offer is thoroughness, honesty about prognosis, and a willingness to genuinely handle animals that are often turned away elsewhere.
