Raw Food & BARF for Cats and Dogs: Complete Guide from a Vet

The raw feeding community in Indonesia is growing rapidly — thousands of Facebook groups, thousands of TikTok videos. But amid that enthusiasm, much of the information circulating is not medically accurate. This article is a science-based guide from a veterinary perspective.

How to Start Raw Feeding Safely

  1. Consult a vet first — confirm your pet is healthy and has no medical conditions that contraindicate raw food
  2. Choose trusted sources — fresh meat from specialized raw feeding suppliers or hygienic markets, not old meat from the freezer
  3. Start with a single protein — chicken is the most common starting point. Wait 2 weeks before adding a new protein
  4. Gradual transition — start with 10% raw / 90% previous food, increase by 10% every 3–5 days
  5. Freeze before use — freeze meat for at least 3–5 days at -18°C to kill most parasites
  6. Monitor stools — raw-fed stools should be small, firm, white/grey. Prolonged diarrhea means something doesn't agree

Frequently Asked Questions

Is raw food safe for kittens and puppies?
With careful management, yes — but the risk is higher than for adult animals. Young animals' immune systems are not yet mature, making them more vulnerable to pathogenic bacteria (Salmonella, Campylobacter). If choosing raw food for young animals, ensure the meat source is very fresh and high quality, freeze for at least 3–5 days before use, and consult a vet about nutritional balance.
What is the difference between BARF and Prey Model Raw?
BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food): contains 60–70% meat/bone, 25–30% organ, 10–15% vegetables, fruit, and supplements. Prey Model Raw (PMR): 80% meat/bone, 10% organ (5% liver), 10% boneless red meat — no vegetables at all, mimicking the proportions of natural prey. PMR is easier to transition to; BARF provides more fiber and phytonutrients.
Are there medical conditions in cats or dogs where raw food is not recommended?
Yes. Raw food is NOT recommended for: immunocompromised animals (FIV/FeLV positive, undergoing chemotherapy, post major surgery), animals with advanced kidney disease (high phosphorus and protein content), animals under 8 weeks of age, pregnant or nursing animals (risk of Listeria contamination to fetuses), and animals with active pancreatitis (high fat content).
