Preparing Your Cat & Dog for Spay/Neuter Surgery: How Long to Fast?
Spay/neuter surgery is a major surgical procedure requiring full anesthesia. As the owner, your role is crucial in the Pre-Operative Preparation stage.
Proper preparation minimizes anesthesia complication risks and speeds up recovery. Conversely, breaking the fasting rules can be fatal.
1. Fasting Protocol
Don't Wait Until It's Too Late!
Mandatory 8–12 Hours Food Fast
Why? Anesthesia often triggers nausea. If the stomach is full, your pet may vomit while unconscious. That vomit can enter the lungs (Aspiration Pneumonia) and cause sudden death or fatal infection.
- Last Meal: 10 PM the night before (if surgery is at 9 AM).
- Water: Can still be given in moderate amounts until the morning (2 hours before leaving).
- Confinement: Keep your pet confined during the fast so they can't steal food or eat garbage/foreign objects.
2. Physical Requirements
- Minimum Age: Male cats >6 months, females >5 months. Small breed dogs >6 months, large breeds >1 year (recommended).
- Body Weight: Minimum 2 kg (to ensure safe anesthesia dosing).
- Testicles (Males): Confirm both testicles have descended into the scrotum. If only one has (Cryptorchid), a more complex abdominal surgery is required.
- Not Pregnant: If you suspect pregnancy, inform the vet. Surgery while pregnant (abortion) carries a higher bleeding risk.
3. What to Bring on Surgery Day
On the day of surgery, don't forget to bring:
- A Sturdy Pet Carrier: Don't carry them in your arms or use a cardboard box. Pets may still be wobbly after anesthesia.
- Absorbent Pad/Underpad: To absorb urine if your pet has an accident while unconscious.
- E-Collar (Cone): Must be put on immediately after your pet regains consciousness to prevent licking the sutures.
- Wet Food: For a small feeding test once fully awake at home.
