Is There a "Fungal Injection" for Cats? Debunking the Myth

"Doc, my cat has a really bad fungal infection — can you just give it a shot to cure it fast?"

We hear this request all the time. However, we need to clear up this serious misconception: In practical veterinary medicine, there is NO such thing as a "fungal injection" to cure Ringworm.

The Confusion: Fungus vs. Scabies

Why is the "fungal injection" myth so widespread? Because owners often confuse Fungus (Ringworm) with Mange (Scabies/Mites).

• Antiparasitic Injection (Ivermectin): Very effective at killing Scabies mites. One injection drastically reduces itching. This is what non-experts often call a "fungal injection."
• Antifungal Medication: There is no injectable form for outpatient use. It comes in capsule (oral) or cream (topical) form.

Why Is There No Antifungal Injection?

Systemic antifungal drugs in injectable form (such as Amphotericin B) are typically used only for life-threatening internal fungal infections in human hospitals, and they are highly toxic (nephrotoxic). They are not used for routine cat skin conditions.

There is a biological product called a Fungal Vaccine (Biocan M), but its purpose is Prevention/Immunity, not an instant cure for an active severe infection. Its availability is also limited.

The Correct Treatment

If your cat has circular bald patches (the classic sign of ringworm), a Birawa Vet doctor will prescribe:

1. Oral Medication: Compounded Itraconazole dosed by body weight (prescription only, as it is hard on the liver).
2. Topical: Miconazole cream or spray.
3. Medicated Bath: Lime Sulfur dip or Ketoconazole shampoo once a week.
