Is There a "Fungal Injection" for Cats? Debunking the Myth

"Doc, my cat has a really bad fungal infection — can you just give it a shot to cure it fast?"

We hear this request all the time. However, we need to clear up this serious misconception: In practical veterinary medicine, there is NO such thing as a "fungal injection" to cure Ringworm.

The Confusion: Fungus vs. Scabies

Why is the "fungal injection" myth so widespread? Because owners often confuse Fungus (Ringworm) with Mange (Scabies/Mites).

Why Is There No Antifungal Injection?

Systemic antifungal drugs in injectable form (such as Amphotericin B) are typically used only for life-threatening internal fungal infections in human hospitals, and they are highly toxic (nephrotoxic). They are not used for routine cat skin conditions.

There is a biological product called a Fungal Vaccine (Biocan M), but its purpose is Prevention/Immunity, not an instant cure for an active severe infection. Its availability is also limited.

The Danger of a Misdiagnosis

Don't Just Inject Anything!

If your cat truly has a FUNGAL infection (Ringworm), injecting a Scabies drug (Ivermectin) WILL NOT CURE IT. It will only burden the kidneys and liver with no result.

The Correct Treatment

If your cat has circular bald patches (the classic sign of ringworm), a Birawa Vet doctor will prescribe:

  1. Oral Medication: Compounded Itraconazole dosed by body weight (prescription only, as it is hard on the liver).
  2. Topical: Miconazole cream or spray.
  3. Medicated Bath: Lime Sulfur dip or Ketoconazole shampoo once a week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an injection to cure a fungal infection?
By standard medical practice in Indonesia: there is NO instant injection that kills skin fungus. Antifungal medications come in tablet/capsule form (oral) or cream/shampoo form (topical).
But my friend said their cat was cured with an injection?
Most likely, your friend's cat had SCABIES (mites), not a fungal infection. The main treatment for Scabies is indeed an injection (Ivermectin). Many non-experts refer to all skin conditions as "fungus."
So what is the correct way to treat a fungal infection?
A combination of prescription oral medication (such as Itraconazole/Ketoconazole), regular topical application, and medicated baths (Lime Sulfur). Fungal treatment takes 3–6 weeks — there is no instant cure.
