Key Takeaways
Many foods that are perfectly safe for humans are toxic to cats and dogs. Some can be deadly in tiny amounts. Here is the complete. Free WhatsApp consultation.
Foods You Must Never Feed Cats & Dogs (Some Are Deadly)
"But this is healthy food — how can it be dangerous for a cat?" — This misunderstanding frequently ends in an emergency vet visit. The metabolic systems of cats and dogs are vastly different from ours. Many foods that are completely safe for humans are toxic, or even deadly, for them.

Foods Dangerous for BOTH Cats and Dogs
Don't Wait Until It's Too Late!
Shallots, Garlic, Onions & Spring Onions
DANGEROUSAll members of the Allium family contain compounds that damage red blood cells — causing haemolytic anaemia. Dangerous in all forms: raw, cooked, or dried powder.
Symptoms: Weakness, pale gums, brownish urine, rapid breathing, collapse.
Xylitol (Artificial Sweetener)
DANGEROUSFound in sugar-free sweets, chewing gum, some peanut butters, vitamin C supplements, and keto products. In dogs, xylitol triggers a massive insulin release → severe hypoglycaemia and liver damage.
Symptoms (appearing 30 min–12 hours later): Sudden weakness, staggering, seizures, yellowing of skin/gums.
Salt & Salty Foods
AVOIDCrisps, salted fish, processed meat, soy sauce — sodium content far exceeds what pets can tolerate. Causes dehydration, kidney damage, and sodium ion poisoning.
Symptoms: Extreme thirst, vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness, seizures.
Macadamia Nuts
AVOIDParticularly dangerous for dogs. The mechanism of toxicity is not fully understood, but causes weakness, hypothermia, and neurological problems.
Symptoms: Hind-leg weakness, vomiting, fever, tremors.
Foods Dangerous Specifically for Dogs
Chocolate (All Types)
DANGEROUSContains theobromine and caffeine. Dark chocolate and cocoa powder are the most dangerous. Milk chocolate is less toxic but still dangerous in large amounts.
Dangerous dose (dark chocolate): ~13 mg/kg of body weight. A 5 kg dog: just 65 g of dark chocolate is enough for serious toxic effects.
Grapes & Raisins
DANGEROUSCan cause acute kidney failure even from a small amount. Strangely, not every dog reacts — but because it is unpredictable, they must be treated as dangerous for all dogs.
Alcohol (including raw bread dough)
DANGEROUSA dog's liver cannot process alcohol. Raw yeast dough also produces alcohol as it ferments inside the stomach. Can cause central nervous system depression and death.
Foods Dangerous Specifically for Cats
Milk & Dairy Products
AVOIDMost adult cats are lactose-intolerant. Cow's milk causes diarrhoea and digestive upset. The cartoon image of cats happily lapping up bowls of milk is profoundly misleading.
Canned Tuna (in excess)
LIMITHuman canned tuna is high in salt and can lead to addiction — cats may refuse other food entirely. Excessive consumption also causes vitamin E deficiency (steatitis). As an occasional treat, it is fine.
Chicken/Beef Liver (in excess)
LIMITSafe occasionally, but feeding it daily can cause vitamin A toxicity (hypervitaminosis A) — leading to bone deformities and liver problems.
If Your Pet Eats Something Dangerous — Do This
- Do not panic, but act quickly. Time is critical in poisoning cases.
- Note what was eaten and how much. A rough estimate is enough to help the vet.
- Contact a vet immediately — even before symptoms appear. Some toxins can be treated before they are fully absorbed.
- Do not induce vomiting without a vet's instruction. For some toxins, bringing the substance back up can damage the oesophagus.
- Do not give large amounts of milk or water as an "antidote" — this is an ineffective myth.
