Cat Seizures & Foaming at the Mouth: Epilepsy or Poisoning?
A cat that is resting suddenly goes rigid, shakes violently, stares with wide eyes, and froths at the mouth. This is a terrifying sight for any owner.
Dangerous myths circulate — "put a spoon in its mouth" or "give it coffee." STOP! Those actions can actually kill your cat.
First Aid: Do's & Don'ts
Don't Wait Until It's Too Late!
DO
- Stay calm and note the time (record how long the seizure lasts).
- Remove sharp or hard objects near your cat.
- Turn off the TV and lights (reduce sensory stimulation).
- Record a video to show your vet.
DO NOT
- Do not put fingers or a spoon in the mouth (you risk a severe bite and your cat's teeth could break).
- Do not hug or restrain the body (this can cause fractures).
- Do not offer food or water while the cat is still disoriented.
Main Causes of Seizures
- Poisoning: Permethrin (flea treatment for dogs), rat poison, lily plants.
- Idiopathic Epilepsy: A genetic brain-electrical disorder (usually begins at 1–5 years of age).
- Metabolic: Blood sugar crash (in kittens), end-stage kidney or liver failure.
- Brain Infection: Dry FIP virus, Toxoplasma, or Rabies.
