How to Introduce a New Cat to a Resident Cat: A Step-by-Step Guide

Cats are highly territorial animals. From the resident cat's perspective, a new cat that suddenly appears is an invader threatening its resources (food, sleeping spots, owner's attention) and territory. Without a proper introduction, the result can be permanent conflict.

Phase 1: Complete Isolation (Days 1–7)

Place the new cat in a separate locked room. The new cat needs its own litterbox, food/water bowls, and bed. Regular visits from you (30 min, 2–3x/day). Take the new cat to the vet to ensure no contagious diseases.

Phase 2: Scent Swapping (Days 5–14)

  1. Swap bedding/towels — place the resident cat's towel in the new cat's room and vice versa
  2. Swap rooms (without the cats) for 30 minutes — let each sniff the scent left behind
  3. Feeding on opposite sides of the door — place each cat's food bowl on either side of the closed door, gradually moving them closer

Phase 3: Visual Introduction (Days 10–21)

Open the door slightly with a barrier (baby gate or door cracked 3–4 cm with a stopper). Let them see each other but no direct contact yet. Start with 5–10 minutes, increase gradually. Stop the session if either shows high stress (puffed tail, aggressive hissing).

Phase 4: Controlled Meeting (Weeks 3–4)

Open the door and let the new cat explore the main room while the resident cat is present. Always have someone supervising. Redirect with toys or treats if tension rises. Never physically force cats together.
