Heat Stroke in Dogs & Cats: Emergency Signs and First Aid

Jakarta — a city with average temperatures of 28–34°C and 80% humidity — is a high-risk environment for heat stroke in pets. This condition can kill within minutes.

🔥 CRITICAL: Heat stroke is an emergency requiring treatment in minutes, not hours. Every minute of body temperature above 41°C causes permanent organ damage.

Early Signs

  • Excessive panting (dogs)
  • Open mouth, heavy drooling
  • Restlessness, seeking cool spots
  • Bright red gums and tongue
  • Paws feel extremely hot

Severe Signs (Emergency)

  • Staggering / unable to stand
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Gums turning blue/pale white
  • Seizures
  • Unconscious (collapsed)

First Aid — Step by Step

  1. Move to a cool place: Air-conditioned room, under a shady tree, or a breezy shaded area
  2. Pour regular water (not ice): Wet the entire body with room-temperature tap water. Focus: neck, armpits, groin, paw pads
  3. Fan the pet: Evaporation of water speeds up the cooling process
  4. Offer water to drink: If conscious and able to swallow — but don't force it
  5. Measure rectal temperature: Target: below 39.5°C. Stop active cooling when this is reached (to prevent hypothermia)
  6. Get to a vet immediately — even if the pet seems to improve, internal organ damage needs to be evaluated
