Signs a Cat Is About to Give Birth & Emergency Prep
The moment kittens are born is magical — but it can quickly turn into a nightmare if complications arise. As an owner, you need to be a prepared "birthing assistant".
Cats can usually give birth on their own, but certain breeds (Persian, British Shorthair) with large heads often have difficulties.
Phase 1: Pre-Labour Preparation (12–24 Hours Before)
Don't Wait Until It's Too Late!
- Nesting: The mother starts seeking out dark spots — inside wardrobes or under the bed. Prepare a cardboard box with a clean cloth lining in a quiet location.
- Temperature Drop: Rectal temperature drops to 37°C (normal is 38–39°C).
- Behaviour Changes: Restlessness, pacing, constant meowing, licking the genital area, and refusing food.
Phase 2: Active Labour (Delivery)
- Contractions: The abdomen visibly tightens rhythmically. The mother may lie on her side or squat.
- Waters Breaking: Clear or slightly yellow fluid is discharged.
- Kitten Born: Kittens are usually born inside an amniotic sac. The mother licks the sac open so the kitten can breathe, then bites through the umbilical cord.
- Placenta: Each kitten is followed by one placenta. Count them! A retained placenta can cause a fatal infection (Metritis).
WARNING SIGNS: When to Go to the Clinic
Emergency C-Section Required If:
- Strong continuous pushing for 30–60 minutes with no kitten delivered.
- More than 4 hours between kittens when the abdomen is still visibly large (more kittens present).
- A kitten is stuck in the birth canal and cannot be delivered even with gentle assistance.
- Dark green/black foul-smelling discharge before any kittens are born (sign of placental separation and foetal distress/death).
- The mother faints or has seizures (Eclampsia/calcium deficiency).
