Cat Suddenly Weak & Refusing to Eat? Do This Home "Triage" First

Seri: Triage & Home Visit

One of the greatest nightmares for any cat owner is seeing a normally lively cat suddenly go quiet, weak, and refuse their favourite food.

Panic can leave us confused: Is this an emergency? Can I wait until tomorrow? In the medical world, there's a concept called Triage — the process of determining how serious a patient's condition is.

Before contacting the Birawa Vet team, you can perform a simple physical check at home:

1. Check the Gums (Detecting Anaemia)

Don't Wait Until It's Too Late!

Gently lift your cat's upper lip and check the colour of their gums:

  • Light Pink: Normal.
  • Pale/White: Sign of anaemia or shock. SERIOUS!
  • Yellow: Sign of liver problems (jaundice).
  • Dark Red/Purple: Sign of poisoning or severe infection.

2. Check the "Skin Tent" (Detecting Dehydration)

Gently pinch the skin at the back of your cat's neck, then release it.

  • Normal: Skin returns to position in less than 1 second.
  • Danger: Skin returns slowly or stays raised. This is a sign of severe dehydration.

3. Check Temperature (Without a Thermometer)

Feel the ears and paw pads. If they feel very cold (like ice), this is dangerous (Hypothermia). Wrap your cat in a blanket immediately!

When Should You Call the Vet Immediately?

If you notice any of the above signs PLUS any of these symptoms:

⚠️ NEVER give human medication (such as Paracetamol) — it is toxic to cats!

If your pet's condition allows for home treatment (IV fluids/antibiotics), the Birawa Vet team is ready to come to you. However, if surgery or X-rays are needed, we will help coordinate a referral.
