Dog Won't Eat: 9 Causes and How to Handle It
A dog that suddenly refuses food can be worrying — and understandably so. Loss of appetite (anorexia) in dogs almost always has a cause, ranging from mild to serious.
This guide helps you trace the cause and decide when a vet visit is needed.
9 Reasons a Dog Won't Eat
Don't Wait Until It's Too Late!
Illness / Medical Condition
This is the cause most worth suspecting when a change happens suddenly. Infections, organ disease, cancer, pain, or nausea from any condition can suppress appetite.
Dental & Oral Problems
Broken teeth, swollen gums, dental abscess, stomatitis — all cause pain when chewing. A dog with mouth pain will often approach the bowl, sniff the food, then walk away without eating.
Stress & Environmental Changes
Moving house, new family members, losing a pet/person they were close to, or routine changes can temporarily suppress appetite. Usually improves on its own within 1–3 days.
Side Effects of Vaccines or Medication
No appetite for 1–2 days after vaccination is normal. Some medications (antibiotics, NSAIDs, dewormers) can also cause temporary nausea and appetite loss.
Spoiled or Disliked Food
Dry food that's been open too long and gone rancid, wet food left out more than 30 minutes, or a sudden brand/flavor change. A dog's nose is far more sensitive — they can detect changes we can't.
Too Many Treats / Human Food
Dogs given frequent treats or human food learn that refusing regular meals = getting something tastier. This is called "learned anorexia" — appetite is intact but selective.
Eating Too Much Outside of Mealtimes
Oversized portions, frequent off-schedule feeding, or free access to food means the dog isn't truly hungry when mealtime arrives.
Hot Weather
Like humans, many dogs eat less when it's very hot. This is normal if the dog is still active and drinking enough water.
Being in Heat (Unspayed Female Dogs)
Female dogs in heat or in early pregnancy often experience reduced appetite. Usually normal and temporary.
How to Encourage Your Dog to Eat Again
For mild cases with no other medical symptoms:
- Warm the food — 10–15 seconds in the microwave for wet kibble or canned food. A stronger aroma usually stimulates appetite.
- Add savory toppings — Unsalted chicken broth (no onion/garlic), a little grated cheese, or a spoonful of wet food on top of dry kibble.
- Temporarily switch textures — If normally on dry food, try wet food for a few days.
- The "tough love" method — Offer food, wait 15 minutes, remove without replacing with something tastier. Repeat at the next mealtime.
- Feed after exercise — Some dogs have a better appetite after light exercise.
